Monroe McGhee, 72, of 3600 Beale Ave., Altoona, formerly of 299 Gray Ave., Johnstown, departed this life Saturday after a lengthy illness.
Monroe was born in Wilmington, N.C., son of the late Troy and Palestine (Jones) McGhee. He married Lois McDaniels in Johnstown in October 1990. She preceded him in death.
Monroe is survived by a daughter, Carmilla Fields, of Youngstown, Ohio; two sisters: Juanita Pattillo of Altoona and Barbara Frames (James) of Willingboro, N.J.; Peggy Jeffries (Charles) of Springfield, Va., Jacqlyn Schley (Raymond) of East Patchogue, N.Y., Leon Riggins Jr. (Janine) of Atlantic City, N.J.; cousins: Joseph Henry (Denise) of Annadale, Va., and Jay Henry (Rosa) of Johnstown; step-children: Jameel McGhee, in the U.S. military, James McDaniels of Colwyn, Pauline McDaniels of Johnstown, John McDaniels of Bellefonte, Frederick McDaniels of Bellefonte, Lois Callahan of Bellefonte, Yvette Anderson of Pleasant Gap and Michelle Holman of Highspire; a faithful and special nephew, Brent Pattillo, who helped during his extended illness; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Monroe graduated from Greater Johnstown High School in 1961.
He was employed by Bethlehem Steel. He had a very strong work ethic and rarely missed work.
Monroe loved his family, friends, wrestling, and football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed westerns and John Wayne was his “favorite cowboy.” He also enjoyed war movies, his favorite being “From Here to Eternity,” which he watched every time it was on TV.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, in the Stevens Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
