Joan C. Holdren

Joan C. Holdren, 91, Tipton, died Feb. 25, 2014, at the home of her son, Terry, after a brief illness.

She was born in Toronto, Canada, daughter of the late Eric Kent and Suzanne (Hallam) Clark. She married G. Richard Holdren on Oct. 22, 1946, in Minneapolis, Minn., and he preceded her in death in February 1986.

Surviving are two sons: Eric C. “Terry” (Margery) of Antis Township and G. Richard Jr. (Anna) of Corvallis, Ore.; a daughter, M. Ann Holdren of Kernersville, N.C.; five grandchildren: Kelly Lynn (Jason) Shura, Owen (Sarah) Holdren, Kasey Leigh (Corey) Hudson, Stuart (Kitty) Holdren and Katrina Laurel Holdren; four great-grandchildren: Madison Grace and Elizabeth Anne Shura, Shayne Isaac Holdren and George Finley Holdren; and an expected fifth great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorena Diane Holdren, in 1993; an infant brother, Roderick; and a brother, Eric Kent Clark.

Joan was a graduate of Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., where she earned her bachelor’s degree in economics. She had been employed as an interviewer in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the site for development of the atomic bomb and where she also met her husband. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone.

Joan served as a member of the Philipsburg Osceola School Board, served as past president of the board of trustees of the Philipsburg State General Hospital for 24 years, and was a founding member and past president of the Philipsburg Public Library. She also volunteered her time as a 4-H and Girl Scout leader.

She loved horses, and she was family-oriented and loved vacationing at the family cottage at Mackie Lake, Canada.

Friends will be received from 2 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Hillside Community Church, Bellwood, Pastor Mark Liller and John Poe officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Philipsburg Cemetery.

The family requests that contributions in Joan’s memory be made to First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone, or Home Nursing Agency Hospice.
