Herbert L. Decker

Herbert Lawrence Decker, 73, rural Roaring Spring, passed away early Monday morning at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness.

He was born in Everett, son of the late Ross H. and Miriam S. (Hollopeter) Decker. He married Linda L. Robison on Sept. 16, 1961, at Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, rural Martinsburg.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 52 years; four sons: Kevin L. of East Freedom, Dwayne H. and wife, Bobbi, and Korey L. and wife, Laurie, all of Hollidaysburg, and Darin L. and wife, Katie, of Roaring Spring; a daughter, Denise L. Rhodes and husband, Buck, of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a sister, Anna Mae Albright of Roaring Spring; and two brothers: Ross J. and Calvin R., both of Roaring Spring.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John P.

Herb was a 1961 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg. As a teenager, he began working for Doc Hoover hauling trash, and in the 1950s, his parents bought the hauling business from Doc for Herb and his brother, Ross. In the early 1960s, he purchased his brother’s half of the business, and then in 1964, he officially began hauling trash as Herbert L. Decker.

Herb was a former member of the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, and he had coached his sons in Little League and had assisted with the local Boy Scout troop. He loved going to NASCAR and dirt track races and also enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, Pastor David Huston officiating. Interment will follow at Brumbaugh Cemetery, rural Martinsburg.

The family prefers that memorial contributions be given to the Morrisons Cove Memorial Park.
