Carolyn ‘Dawn’ Baker Burket

Carolyn Baker Burket “Grammy Dawn,” 76, Henrietta, rural Martinsburg, passed away Sunday morning at her home following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born in Lafayette, rural New Enterprise, daughter of the late Elwood C. and Dorothy M. (Detterline) Imler. She was twice married, first to J. Donald Baker on June 12, 1957. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1978. She then married Donald Burket, who also preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons: Bradley Baker and James “Jay” Baker, both of Martinsburg, and Brian Baker of Duncansville; 10 grandchildren: Aaron Baker (Kelly), Amber Dick (Jeremy), Ashley Whitfield (Robert), Heather Reed (Dave), Holly Baker, Darren Bowser, Benjamin Baker (Natalie), Emily Baker, Jeri Reid (Jeffrey) and Candis Baker; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Cecelia Hoover of Roaring Spring and Darlene Fouse (John) and Bonnie Truman, all of Martinsburg.

She was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Bryce Whitfield.

Dawn was a 1956 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg, and through the years was active in helping coordinate the All Class Reunion for her high school. Along with her family, Dawn was a lifelong dairy farmer. She also was employed as a secretary for the Spring Cove School District.

Dawn was an active, long-time member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, where she served in the Women’s Fellowship Ministry, church leadership team and Carpenter’s Tools Ministry. She was a Brethren Disaster Team volunteer, a lifetime Deaconess, a former Sunday school teacher and she helped organize the Tour De Dunker Bicycle Riding Club.

Dawn was a member and past president of the Martinsburg Business & Professional Women’s Club and for many years helped organize and coordinate the Martinsburg Fourth of July agricultural parade.

She enjoyed knitting baby blankets, attending Central High School sporting events and watching Pittsburgh Steelers football.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Memorial Church of the Brethren, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014, with Pastor Joel F. Nogle officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to her church.
