William L. Singer

William L. Singer, 89, of Altoona went to be with the Lord Thursday at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Clarence and Daisy (Pollen) Singer. He married Velma J. Kissell on Nov. 5, 1943, in Altoona.

Surviving are his wife of more than 70 years; a daughter, Barbara Rossman of Altoona; a son, William D. and wife, Dawn, of Altoona; three grandsons: Todd Rossman and wife, Jami, Jason Davison and wife, Tricia, and William R.; two great-grandsons: Troy and Owen; a great-granddaughter, Jesi; a sister, Delores Burley of Altoona; seven nephews: Barry Wayne and Lester, both in North Carolina, Donnie, Joel and Paul, all of Hollidaysburg, and Charles Clayton Burley and Dick, both of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nickole Rossman; five brothers: Clarence, Al, Joe, Don and Pete; and a sister, Edna.

He was a 1943 graduate of Altoona High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the 7th Beach Battalion and was involved in several major invasion campaigns, including D-Day in Normandy and Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the Pacific Theatre. In later years, he was interviewed by PBS Television recalling those experiences.

Bill retired as a truck driver for Lafferty Trucking after more than 66 years of service. Following that he worked for several years at Lynn Trucking Co. in Altoona.

Bill attended Altoona Bible Church. He was a member of Park Hills Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and cards. He loved spending time at his place on the beach in New Jersey. Bill was very proud of his converted motor home, the “Par Tee Bus,” which he took on many family trips, golf trips and Penn State games.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata, with the Rev. Stewart W. McClelland officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
