Ruby Lucille (Gates) Detwiler
Ruby Lucille (Gates) Detwiler, 102, Huntingdon, passed away Wednesday afternoon at her home where she had resided since 1944. She had been in declining health for the past three years.
She was born in Hopewell, Bedford County, the third child of the late Charles and Susie (Creps) Gates. She was united in marriage to Emmert Ira Detwiler on June 7, 1934, in New Enterprise, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1991.
Surviving are a son, Ronald Emmert and wife, Barbara; a granddaughter, Stacy K. (Detwiler) Sinniger and husband, Brian; a grandson, Shawn Kery Detwiler and wife, Chasity; four great-grandchildren: Katrina Elizabeth Sinniger, Leeann Rachelle Sinniger, Shawn Charles Emmert Detwiler and Devin Gene Detwiler; and a step-great-grandson, Nicholas Max Wiser, all of whom live in the Huntingdon area.
She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Olga Gates; a close friend, W. Gene Henry of Martinsburg; and many nieces and nephews.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, Ruby was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Snyder; and two brothers: Robert and Willard Gates.
Ruby had been a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon, since 1946.
A lifetime homemaker, she was known for her cooking and her baking of pies, which she was always generous in sharing with others. Throughout her life, she enjoyed baseball and particularly liked attending her great-grandchildren’s sporting events. She also enjoyed Penn State football tailgating, which she continued to participate in until November 2013. During the last several years, she was very fond of her bi-weekly car rides to Big Valley and the Raystown Dam area and would admire the trees, mountains and clouds. She loved spending time with family and especially enjoyed family celebrations and various events.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in the sanctuary of the Stone Church of the Brethren, 1623 Moore St., Huntingdon, followed by a celebration of life service at 4 p.m., the Revs. Dale W. and Christy L. Dowdy officiating. Friends will also be received immediately after the service in the sanctuary of the church. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona.
