Herbert Sheldon Summers

Herbert Sheldon Summers, 84, Hollidaysburg, passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, Saturday evening at his home, after an apparent heart attack.

He was born in Manns Choice, son of the late Frank L. and Anna C. (Hay) Summers. He married Gwendolyn J. Foster on Aug. 17, 1948, at Grace Lutheran Church, Altoona. She passed away Oct. 2, 2013.

Surviving are a son, Daniel F. and wife, Bonnie, at home; two grandchildren: Desiree L. Hetrick and husband, Michael, of Hesston and Matthew L. and wife, Tina, of Leechburg; six great-grandchildren: Cody, Sarah, Wyatt, Gunner, Dana and Destiny; and numerous nephews and nieces and their families in the Morrisons Cove area.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Melvin, twins Cletus and Clifford, and Virgil, who was killed in action during WWII; and two sisters: Dorothy Furry and Margaret “Peggy” Summers.

Herb retired as fleet supervisor for Pepsi Cola Corp.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, where he was formerly active in a large number and variety of capacities.

Herb was a member and Past Master of Juniata Lodge No. 282, F. & A. M., Hollidaysburg, a member of Marble Lodge No. 702, F. & A. M., Danby, Vt., Altoona Consistory, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Mountain Commandery 10, Altoona, where he was past commander and past secretary, Mount Moriah Royal Arch Chapter, where he was past High Priest and current secretary, Mountain Council, York Rite, and Studebaker Drivers Club of America.

He enjoyed camping and travel, especially to the New England states, antique cars and visiting his family, including extended family.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, where Masonic services will be held Wednesday evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Bolger Funeral Home, with Pastor Greg Harbaugh officiating. Private interment will follow at Spring Hope Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to Zion Lutheran Church, Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, any Masonic charity or the charity of your choice.
