Shirley R. Levinson
Shirley R. Levinson, 92, a resident of Sunrise at Huntcliff Summit near Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Altoona, died Monday after an extended illness.
She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, daughter of the late Meyer and Esther (Kasper) Nichols. She married Lewis Levinson on Jan. 9, 1944, in Augusta, Ga., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1995.
Surviving are three daughters: Susan Gottfried of Atlanta, Ga., Michele Krapf and husband, Alan, of San Antonio, Texas, and Judy Razaitis and husband, Lee, of Atlanta; five grandchildren: Marc Gottfried and wife, Jessica DeKoning, Megan Gottfried, Joshua Krapf and wife, Lauren, Elissa Krapf and Evan Razaitis; and two great-grandchildren: Lewis and Griffin Gottfried.
In blessed memory are two brothers: Wolfe and Charles Nichols; and a son-in-law, Mort Gottfried.
Shirley began her career as a bookkeeper during WWII and continued working throughout her life with her husband at L&L Sales Carpet Warehouse. She was an active member of Temple Beth Israel. She was an avid bridge player, achieving Golden Age Master of the American Contract Bridge League. She was a life member of Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library and had been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at Mount Sinai Cemetery, Altoona, followed by a memorial service at noon at Temple Beth Israel by Rabbi Audrey Korotkin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Temple Beth Israel or the Altoona Area Public Library in Shirley’s memory.
