Pauline M. Fries

Pauline M. Fries, 94, a resident of The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, passed away on Friday at UPMC Altoona, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late John and Lena (Elder) Karstetter. She married Kenneth E. Fries on Nov. 24, 1943, and they were married for 70 years before Ken’s passing in December 2013.
Pauline is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Harbison (Richard) of Springfield, Pa.; two sons: Stephen Fries (Michele) of Lancaster, and Jon Fries (Susan) of Altoona; four grandchildren: Kristina Zuniga (Steve), Kathryn Hebert (Jarrod), Brian Fries (Rebecca) and Erin Fries; two great-grandchildren: Rylie Zuniga and Wyatt Hebert; a sister, Lois Dykeman of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Karstetter.
Pauline was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at Boyer’s Candy Co. prior to becoming a wife, mother and homemaker.
She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Simpson-Temple United Parish, and also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Pauline enjoyed playing bridge, socializing at Park Hills and listening to jazz, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at the Simpson-Temple United Parish, 2212 Sixth Ave., Altoona, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., conducted by Pastor Denise Arpino. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg or Simpson-Temple United Parish.
