Harold E. Steinbeiser

Harold E. Steinbeiser, 74, Altoona, passed away Monday at the Cleveland Clinic as a result of a brief illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Lewis and Anna (Pielmeier) Steinbeiser.

Surviving are his wife, Relura “Lorie” (Hess); two daughters: Beth Roland (Randy) and Wendy Koehle; four grandchildren: Kaylee and Jordan Harter and Logan and Marlana Koehle; two sisters: Patricia Isenberg (Ralph) of Altoona and Josie Bender of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother-in-law, who was like a son to him, Jeff Hess (Cathy) in Arizona; nieces and nephews; three godchildren: Amy Banks, Miranda Babiak and Ranee Reinheimer; cousins; and many, many friends who loved him.

Known to most as “Steiny,” he was a man who left a mark in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him, especially his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His work ethic was impeccable, especially working with teenagers at the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center after his retirement from Penelec.

From the time Steiny was a child, he was a devout Catholic, always willing to help. He often drove the sisters at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament wherever they needed to go. As a teenager, his devotion to Catholicism continued, attending and graduating from Altoona Catholic High School, where he excelled in the classroom and on both the basketball court and football field, earning him the Joel Cohen Blanket Award in 1958.

Although he briefly contemplated joining the seminary, Steiny attended Millersville University, where he met the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Relura “Lorie” Hess. He lived for his family.

Steiny was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the PIAA District 6 Football Officials and an avid Notre Dame fan. He impacted so many who knew him, including those he coached many years ago. He will be forever loved and missed and never forgotten, even by those who briefly knew him.

Friends will be received from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church by Father David R. Rizzo. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.

The family requests that donations be made to Home Nursing Agency, 201 Chestnut Ave., P.O. Box 352, Altoona, PA 16603, where he received the most compassionate and heartfelt care, or to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Ave., Altoona, PA 16601, in Steiny’s memory.
