Eugene R. Hagg

Eugene R. Hagg, 82, Tyrone, died Tuesday at Epworth Manor, Tyrone.

He was born in Tyrone, son of Ralph and Emma (Schoch) Hagg.

Surviving are two brothers: Francis and wife, Martha, and Vincent, all of Tyrone; and a friend, Vila Ann Dillon of Aiken, S.C.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Sister Mary Lambert and Louise Klesius; and a brother, Joseph.

Gene was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a medic in the 2nd Division. He retired in 1980 from Chicago Rivet & Machine Co., Tyrone, as a machine operator after 25 years of service and had also raised beef cattle on the family farm. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Tyrone American Legion, Tyrone VFW and Hookies Fire Company, Tyrone, and was a charter member of the Monogram Club, Tyrone.

Gene was an avid sports fan, following local Tyrone High School sports and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He had excelled in high school sports and had played an integral part in the undefeated Tyrone High School football teams of 1947-48. He was a state qualifier in wrestling and was later voted the outstanding post WWII athlete, winning the Jim Thorpe Award.

There will be no viewing or visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at St. Matthew Church with Father Jozef Kovacik as celebrant. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
