John R. Helsel

John R. Helsel, 72, Roaring Spring, died Thursday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove.

He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Russell and Anna (Kensinger) Helsel. He married Joy Smith on May 21, 1961, in Curryville.

Surviving are his wife; two children: Karen J. Brown and husband, Keith B., of Loysburg and Daren J. and wife, Jennifer B., of Chambersburg; two grandchildren: Kyle B. Brown and Quentin J. Helsel; a sister, Susan Wicker, a brother, Kenneth; and his mother-in-law, Grace E. Smith, a resident at The Village at Morrisons Cove.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister.

John was a 1959 graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel High School. He retired from Agway Inc., Curryville, and had previously worked at Hershberger’s Garage, Martinsburg. During retirement, he worked part time for Robert Yoder Trucking, where he had a mail run to Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.

John was a member of the Curryville Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing and reading sports magazines.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, by Pastor Mike Benner. Interment will follow in Dry Hill Cemetery, Woodbury.
