John D. Luddy

John D. Luddy, 82, Hollidaysburg, died Monday at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Pittsburgh, son of the late William E. and Esther (Cassidy) Luddy. He first married Helen Batkiewicz in 1958, and she preceded him in death in 2004. Together they raised six children. He then married Patricia (Johnston) Tarlton of Hollidaysburg on Dec. 29, 2012.

Surviving are his wife; six children: Monica (Jeffrey) Souza of Ellicott City, Md., John (Kathy) of Omaha, Neb., Kevin (Debbie) of Mount Airy, Md., Susan Heilmann of Aurora, Ill., Janice (Paul) Viola of Annandale, Va., and Joan (Bob) Miller of Manheim; a stepdaughter, Michelle (John) Smithmyer of Hollidaysburg; a stepson, David (Patty) Duval of Waxhaw, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; five siblings: Vincent (Stefania) of Gaithersburg, Md., Frederick (Sarah) of Bowie, Md., Jane Flynn of Granville, Ohio, Margaret Horell of Altoona and Esther (Jim) Anderson of Wheeling, W.Va.; and his mother-in-law, June Johnston of Martinsburg.

He was preceded in death by four siblings: William, Francis, Mary and Charles.

John was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and Penn State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He started out working as an apprentice in the Altoona railroad shops and then worked for Veeder-Root Co. in Duncansville, retiring after 33 years of service. He continued to do electrical engineering consulting work for many years.

John was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, as well as the Knights of Columbus, Unter Uns and Swiss Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially looked forward to the many family trips to Cook Forest and Top Sail. He loved to swim, often having his swim bag in the car so he would be ready.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. Committal will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Gallitzin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to The Guilfoyle Fund in care of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School.
