JoAnn E. Byrne

JoAnn E. Byrne, 84, Altoona, died Tuesday at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Melvin and Helen (Geist) Kauffman. She married Richard V. “Dick” Byrne Sr. on Sept. 20, 1947, at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Altoona. He died Jan. 18, 2008.

She is survived by five children: Mary Jo Bracken (Bruce) of Williamsburg, Va., Kathleen A. Santarsieri (Joseph) of Richmond, Va., Richard V. Jr. of Rowe, N.M., Stephen J. (Marci) of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Bridget H. Lemur (partner Beth) of Louisville, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers: John M. “Jack” Kauffman of Vero Beach, Fla., and Thomas W. Kauffman of Albuquerque, N.M.

JoAnn was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Byrne; and a brother, C. Robert Kauffman.

JoAnn was a graduate of Altoona High School. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona, Sacred Heart Christian Mothers and Blair County Civic Symphony. She was a volunteer at Garvey Manor and for Meals on Wheels.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a Vigil for the Deceased will be celebrated at 1:45 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona, with Monsignor Stanley B. Carson officiating. Committal rites will be held at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona.
