J. Richard ‘Dick’ Johnson

Feb. 29, 1916 – Dec. 20, 2013

J. Richard “Dick” Johnson, 97, Valley View Health and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of 1001 E. Walton Ave., Apt. 306, Altoona, died Friday at the Center.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late J. Blair and Elmira (Gray) Johnson. He was twice married; first on Dec. 27, 1946, to Dorothy A. McIntire, who died in November of 1981; and later on Dec. 7, 1991, to Helen J. Harshbarger, who survives.

He is survived by his wife; two sons: Jerome R. Johnson and wife, Barbara, and Vincent A. Johnson, all of Altoona; a daughter, Judith M. Weber and husband, Dick, of Hollidaysburg; two step-sons: Stephen Delgrosso and wife, Ingrid, of Fort Collins, Colo., and David Delgrosso and wife, Dawn, of Altoona; a step-daughter, Patricia Delgrosso in New Hampshire; four grandchildren: Deborah Krall (Kiernan), Christopher Johnson (Kim), Brian Johnson and C. Jacob Weber; three great-grandchildren: Hannah and Samantha Krall and Madeline Johnson; five step-grandchildren; and one step great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a great grandson, Adam Wescott Johnson.

Dick retired in 1976 as a conductor from Conrail after 35 years of service.

He enjoyed golf, bowling and working crossword puzzles.

He was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church where he was an usher and a 50-year member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. He was a life member of the K of C, Bavarian Aid Society and the Froshinn.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Monsignor Timothy Stein. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society; St. Mary’s Catholic Church; or to Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School in Dick’s memory.
