Cal G. Griffith III
Cal G. Griffith III, 86, Hollidaysburg, died Thursday at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Cal G. Jr. and Charlotte Louise (Williams) Griffith. He married Joan Dobson on Aug. 7, 1954, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife; two children: Peter and wife, Bobbi, of Charlotte, N.C., and Amy L. Griffith Daubert of Mechanicsburg; two grandchildren: Carly and Andrew; and a sister, Mary Louise Kimmel of Altoona.
Cal was a 1945 graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy and a 1950 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, where he was sports editor and later editor of the Bainbridge Mainsheet. He was president of Cal G. Griffith Jr. Agency Inc., founded by his grandfather in 1900, where he served for 63 years. He was a lifelong active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, serving several times on the vestry and various committees.
Cal was a former president of the Altoona Lions Club, where he was a very active member. He was also a member of Mountain Lodge 282, F&AM, Jaffa Shrine and Jaffa Chanters and a two-time Blair County Republican chairman, serving as a state delegate at two Republican national conventions. He served on the Altoona Area School board and Altoona Area Public Library board. He had also served as sports editor of the Altoona Tribune.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church by Father Patrick Collins. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
