Alfred N. ‘Sonny’ Rubino

Alfred N. “Sonny” Rubino, 83, Altoona, passed away Saturday at Valley View Health and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of Alfred A. and Lois (Curry) Rubino. He married Rose Anne Fernicola.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Rose; a sister, Patricia (Nick) Pileggi of Longwood, Fla.; a niece, Cynthia (Ed) Eaton of Altoona, who was raised in the family home; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholas; and a sister, Janet Kirk.
Sonny attended Altoona Catholic High School. He entered the U.S. Army in December 1948 and was honorably discharged in June 1952 as a staff sergeant during the Korean War. He was owner of “Sonny” Bar and retired from Garvey Manor.
Sonny was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where he attended Mount Carmel School and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of American Legion A&J Iaia Post 827, Altoona.
He was an avid New York Yankees and Notre Dame fan who enjoyed attending the games. He was also instrumental in the resurrection of the Sunday Softball League, where his team played various prisons.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, in Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery, with full military honors.
