John J. ‘Jake’ Steiner

John J. “Jake” Steiner, 83, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Cross Keys, passed away Saturday at the Home.
He was born in Loop Station, Hollidaysburg, son of John and Madeline (Skutchall) Steiner. He married Shirley G. Kaplan on Jan. 3, 1952, in Cumberland, Md. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2011, after having shared 59 years of marriage.
Surviving are three daughters: Bonnie Lou Hemcher of Duncansville and Diana Thompson and Debbie Dunn, both of Altoona; five sons: John L., Francis, Robert and Richard “Rick,” all of Altoona, and Dennis in Ohio; 17 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and a brother, Peter of Hollidaysburg.
Jake served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He retired from the Hollidaysburg School District after 20 years of service as a painter in the maintenance department.
Jake enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 4, 2013, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, where a 10 a.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, by Pastor Jerry Stumpf. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
