John D. Morgan, 84, The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, formerly of Clappertown, rural Williamsburg, went home to be with the Lord Friday afternoon at UPMC Altoona after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Anderson, Ind., son of the late James H. and Grace P. (Dollar) Morgan. He met his future wife, Ruth E. Longenecker, while serving with the Brethren Volunteer Service in New Windsor, Md., and they married on July 6, 1952, at Smithfield Church of the Brethren, rural Martinsburg.
Surviving are his wife; five sons: John Allen (Beth) of rural Williamsburg, Richard of Jersey Shore, Stephen at home, Rodney (Mary) of Claremont, Calif., and David (Kimberly) of Kane; three daughters: Robin of Santa Ana, Calif., Renee Wheland (Sam) of rural Williamsburg and Mildred Young (Terry) of Altoona; 15 grandchildren: Ashley, Torrey, Dale, Mike, Josh, Andrew, Angela, Tim, Monica, Matthew, Taylor, Rachael, Neil, Samantha and Mike; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was the last of his immediate family of 11 children.
John retired as a custodian for the Spring Cove School District in 1994 after 26 years of service. Previously he had been employed by his father-in-law, Lester, at Longenecker’s Farm, Clappertown. He was a longtime member of Smithfield Church of the Brethren, now Smithfield Church, where he was a former adult Sunday school class teacher.
John was one of the original “cowboys” for the Brethren Volunteer Service’s “Heifer Project,” now Heifer International, having traveled abroad to serve in China and Poland. He enjoyed gardening, especially flower gardening, reading, flea marketing and the outdoors.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Smithfield Church, Piney Creek and Sportsman roads, Huston Township, rural Martinsburg, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, Pastor James W. Snyder officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be given to Smithfield Church.
