Shirley Jeanne Carter
Shirley Jeanne Carter, 85, of Altoona joined her beloved husband William in paradise on Saturday.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late James Vernon “J.V.” and S. Katharyne (Sell) Boland. She was married 65 years to William L. Carter.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, M. Katharyne “Kitty” Carles. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Lawrence D. (Nancy J.) of Altoona, Connie Jeanne Trimer (James “Jet”) of Altoona, Timothy U. (Delly) of Howard, Pa. and Nelda Kay Sharbaugh (Bert) of Ebensburg; and three sisters: Donna Broyles of Christiansburg, Va., Nancy Mills of Hollidaysburg and Suzanne Hatch of Bellwood. Her progeny also include 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Shirley was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School.
She was a working mother and wife with an employment history which included: The Altoona Shoe Factory, Benzel’s Pretzels, Loungeray of Hollidaysburg and Tritex Sportswear. She retired as a supervisor at El Greif & Bros. in Bellwood.
Shirley also drove and loaded the family coal trucks to Scott’s Mine in Blandburg and Valest Coal (the current recycling center) on the Buckhorn for her husband to deliver house coal at the end of his shift at the PRR. She helped her husband expand their three room home into a seven room home over a period of years. Together they acquired, remodeled and managed 18 rental units in Altoona.
Bill and Shirley’s home was the gathering place for their children, their friends and other extended family. Guitar music and singing were part of every festivity.
Shirley was active in the East End United Methodist Church, serving often as liturgist and enjoying the camaraderie of the “Piece Makers” quilting club. She was a proficient seamstress and made uniforms for Sylvania employees, many wedding gowns, clothes for her children and quilts for all her offspring. She enjoyed playing Scrabble with her sister Nancy, reading and watching Jeopardy on TV.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 14, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona. Viewing will be held at the East End United Methodist Church, 405 E. Hudson Avenue, Altoona, from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday, at which time services will be held by the Rev. Jason Schwartzman.
Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to the East End United Methodist Church.

Shirley Jeanne Carter, 85, of Altoona died early Saturday morning, Oct. 12, 2013, in the palliative care unit at UPMC Altoona. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at East End United Methodist Church, 405 East Hudson Ave., Altoona.
