Robert E. Peterman

Robert E. Peterman, 91, of Altoona, slipped away peacefully Friday just before lunch at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home after 12 years of residing there since a fall early in 1999.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late William H. and Clara M. (Truman) Peterman. He was one of 12 siblings and is survived by a sister, Alta Shadel of Harrisburg; and many nieces and nephews with families. He married Peggy A. Hell on Sept. 9, 1961, and she was at his side during his final moments.

After graduating from Altoona High School, Bob enlisted in the US Air Force and was deployed to the Pacific theater. After World War II was over, he entered a career of food services and canteen management, first at the Pennsylvania Railroad shops in Altoona, and later for many years at hospitals in Altoona and Johnstown.

In his leisure time, Bob loved to go dancing, and do so with flair and style, a true passion he shared with his wife, Peggy, throughout the years and decades.

He also loved his “rides,” and just about every two years he got himself a new set of wheels, often sparkling in chrome, and especially from the ’50s with a big set of fins.

Bob was a long time member of the Jaffa Shrine and VFW and also loved pets.

There will be no viewing, but a memorial service for Bob will be held on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at Stevens Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m. by Pastor Elizabeth Hess. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to diabetes research or the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602. Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.
