Melvin E. ‘Mel’ Lafferty

Melvin E. “Mel” Lafferty, 64, Altoona, died Monday at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Bernard “Bernie” and Adelia (DeFrancisco) Lafferty. He married Mary Ickes on June 2, 1973.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Gerri Butler and Brenda Lafferty, both of Altoona; three sons: Donald “Jake,” Ricky and Melvin “Barry” Jr., all of Altoona; 12 grandchildren: Mary Jo, Megan, Justine, Brenden, Devin, Tiffani, Dylan, Breonna, Taylor, Jullian, Mandi and Camden; two great-grandchildren: Ohen and Lylah Mae; two sisters: Donna Wogan in Missouri and Patty Wendt of Newry; and two brothers: Edward “Eddie” of Altoona and Robert “Bobby” of Newry.

He is also survived by four daughters-in-law: Diane Staus, Brooke Lafferty, Sally Stetter and Wendy Lafferty; and a son-in-law, Justin Jenkins.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Bernie and Paul.

Mel was a graduate of Altoona Area High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1968-70. He was employed with Lithcote, now Union Tank Car, and he enjoyed camping, hunting and working on cars and loved animals.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no service.
