Marie M. Gallace

Marie M. Gallace, 81, Altoona, passed away peacefully at UPMC Altoona on Saturday after a brief illness.

She was born in Winburne, daughter of the late Peter M. and Mary (Sabolsice) Marcinko and grew up in the small coal mining town of Wood. Her first job was working for her uncle in the Wood post office. After graduating from Robertsdale High School in 1950, she moved to Philipsburg as a telephone operator with Bell Telephone. Later, her job brought her to Altoona, where she met the love of her life.

Marie married John J. Gallace on June 16, 1956. Together the two of them operated the Gallace Music Shop for 52 years. They took pride in selling musical instruments to Blair County musicians as well as offering supplies and expert repairs. John preceded Marie in death on Feb. 11, 2009.

Surviving are her son, John, and his wife, Betsy; four grandchildren: Don, Becca, Jimmy and Tony; a brother, Michael Marcinko and his wife, Claudia; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her sister and best friend, Betty Harvey.

Marie was a member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She enjoyed shopping, craft fairs and traveling in later life with her husband, John, especially the Mount Carmel bus trips with Father Frank. She particularly loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, and 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Santella Funeral Home, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John J. Gallace Memorial Scholarship c/o CPCF 1330 11th Ave. Altoona, PA 16601. Founded in 2009 by Doug Stephens of Bandman Rental & Repair and the Gallace Family, the scholarship helps to support young musicians with their education.
