Josephine M. Cerully
Josephine M. Cerully, 93, formerly of Altoona, passed away Wednesday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of Marion and Nina (Scalise) Salomie. She married Joseph A. Cerully on Dec. 8, 1938, and he preceded her in death in March 1980.
Surviving are four daughters: Judith Spiridigliozzi of Baltimore, Md., Carol (John) Weible of Hagerstown, Md., and Nancy (Bob) Sutton and Josie (Steve) Woodcock , both of Altoona; three sons: Dennis (Katie) of East Freedom, Robert (Anna) of Altoona and James (Teresa) of Richmond, Va.; 10 grandchildren: Steven, Nicholas (Kellie) and Christopher (Windy) Spiridigliozzi, Ronald (Tammy) Moffitt, Jennifer (Jon) Cerully, Laura (David) Dial, Kate, Carter and Lucas Cerully and Stevie Woodcock; eight great-grandchildren: Michael, Kristin, Brady, Gibson and Milo Spiridigliozzi and Alex, Kayla and Isabella Moffitt; and a great-great-granddaughter, McKenzie Guardia.
She is also survived by four step-grandsons; five step-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Carmen Fedesco, who was reared in her childhood home; a niece, Gloria Ciambotti; a number of great-nieces and great-nephews; and her Garvey Manor family.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna; a granddaughter, Carla; two sisters: Anna and Mary; two brothers: Nick and Joe; and a special friend, Domenic “Shorty” Lestochi.
Josephine was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School. She retired from the Altoona Area Public Library in 1973 and was also a volunteer at Altoona Hospital for more than 10 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, where she enjoyed volunteering at the church festival for many years. She also volunteered for many school functions when her children attended the grade school at St. Mary’s.
Josephine also belonged to Mary, Queen of Angels Secular Franciscan Fraternity, Golden Nuggets and Horseshoe Seniors. She enjoyed family gatherings, including the annual mother-daughter weekend, dancing, reading, a card club for more than 40 years with a special group of ladies, and traveling.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
