Charles E. ‘Chuck’ Roberts

Charles E. “Chuck” Roberts, 65, Altoona, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, after an extended illness.

Chuck was born in Gallitzin, son of the late Benjamin Burr and Marie (Mills) Roberts. He married Marion J. (Truby) Kenepp on Aug. 19, 1988, in Altoona.

He is survived by his wife; three stepsons: David G. Kenepp, of Newmarket, N.H., and Dennis R. Kenepp and Douglas J. Kenepp, both of Altoona; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters.

Chuck was preceded in death by a twin sister, Connie Roberts.

Chuck was a graduate of Williamsburg High School. He served in the U.S. Marines as a lance corporal in the Vietnam War where he was wounded in combat. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal (Vietnam), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star and Vietnam Campaign Medal with device.

Chuck retired as a truck driver. He was a member of Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona.

Chuck was a 40 year member of the Disabled American Veterans, in which he served in various offices and positions, including the State Executive Committee, as past Commander of District 5 and as current Commander of Altoona Chapter 34. He was also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Chuck served as the governor’s representative to the advisory board of Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. He and his wife volunteered at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, where he was responsible for the volunteer program that included bingo games and distribution of gifts to inpatients during all the major holidays.

Chuck was also known for his participation in the Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades. He enjoyed the outdoors and fishing.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. Committal Rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
