Walter Glenn Barkley

Walter Glenn “Glenn” Barkley, 86, Altoona, died Tuesday.

He was born in Black Log Valley, son of the late Walter and Anne Beryl (Hartman) Barkley. He was married to Edna M. Edmundson on Feb. 11, 1946, at First Methodist Church, Mount Union, by the Rev. Edgar Henry. She preceded him in death on Jan. 11, 2003.

Surviving are four daughters: Barbara J. Cupples of Philadelphia, Glenda M. Carman and husband, Chris, of New Freedom, Linda K. Fanelli and husband, Michael, of Altoona and Brenda L. Barkley-Mingle and husband, Charlie, of Altoona; six grandchildren: Rebecca Cupples, Adam Fanelli, Ginger Claar, Heather Mingle, Melissa Mingle and Chaz Mingle; eight great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law and best friend, Rose M. Edmundson, with whom he resided.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; and two sisters: Hazel Smith and Thelma Stepsianos.

Glenn was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard and Air Force, serving during WWII and Korea with the 7th Infantry. He retired as a mechanic from Ward Trucking Co. He was a former member of the A&J Iaia American Legion Post and Buccinese Society and had tended bar for many local establishments.

Glenn was a history buff, enjoyed the outdoors and was a former hunting guide. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m., the Rev. Peggy Bonsell officiating. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Jaffa Shrine, P.O. Box 1984, Altoona, PA 16603-1984.
