Howard M. ‘Howie’ Allen
Howard M. “Howie” Allen, 53, Westmont, died Saturday.
He was born in Munich, Germany, son of the late Merrill and Judith C. (Cleveland) Allen.
Surviving are three sons: David, Sean and Kevin; three grandchildren: Seven, Hudson and Eliza; a sister, Priscilla (Allen) Scott; a brother, Milton “Skipper”; and Howie’s ex-wife, Caryn Herman of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George Blake “GB.”
Howie was a mason in Deer Isle, Maine. He left home on the island of Stonington, Maine, to start his adult life and found himself in Bedford, N.Y.
He was one of the kindest and most loving, caring and helpful men anyone could meet. He served as a volunteer firefighter and underwater rescue scuba diver. He was very passionate about helping people and always stopped to help those in need.
Howie moved to Pennsylvania, married his first love and became a father to her son. They soon had two sons of their own, and he was a wonderful and loving father and husband. He always had a twinkle in his caring eyes and a smile.
A man of many talents and abilities, he was the proud owner of Howie Does It, a general contracting and repair service. He loved his work and the people he met through his work, and it showed. He was an “old-school” handyman, and there really wasn’t much he couldn’t build or repair.
When Howie wasn’t working, he enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, riding his motorcycle, golf, bowling, playing bocce, rooting for his second favorite NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and more than anything, hanging out with his family of friends in Johnstown, by whom he will be missed.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing. Friends will be received from 4:30 until the 6:30 p.m. funeral service Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Hindman Funeral Homes and Crematory Inc., 1521 Frankstown Road, Johnstown.
