Annetta L. Helsel, 87, Altoona, went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Saturday morning at her home after a brief illness, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born in Duncansville, daughter of the late Dean and Grace (Liebegott) Lykens. She married Austin H. Helsel on June 18, 1949, in Duncansville. He preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1982, after having shared 33 years of marriage.
Surviving are five children: Ann Hamp of Altoona, Austin (Theresa) of Marietta and Tim (Melanie), Mark (Dotty) and Debbie Montrella, all of Altoona; eight grandchildren: Ken and Joe Plisinski, Ashley (Helsel) Wyandt, and Matt, Christian, Lexi, Zack and Travis Helsel; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Chris, in 1964; and her older brother, Robert Lykens.
Annetta was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, where she was class treasurer. She attended Zeth Business School in Bedford. She previously worked for Gable’s and at Blair County Courthouse, and then at Bishop Guilfoyle High School. She was very proud to be a full-time mother for most of her adult life.
Annetta enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, rides in the country, picnics and going out for dinner. Most of all, she was a devoted and loving mother who enjoyed being with her family.
She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Altoona for over 40 years.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Liebegott-Brown Funeral Home Inc., 1218 Fourth Ave., Duncansville. A one hour time of music and reflection will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Simpson-Temple United Methodist Parish, Pastor Denise M. Arpino officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Annetta’s memory may be given to Simpson-Temple United Methodist, 2212 Sixth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
