Robert E. ‘Mitch’ Mitchell

Robert E. “Mitch” Mitchell, 79, Altoona, died peacefully Tuesday at Golden LivingCenter-Hillview after a long illness surrounded by his loving family and devoted caregivers.
He was born in Marsteller, son of the late Donald and Anna (McNally) Mitchell. He married Shirley Mae McCreary on July 14, 1956, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Shirley M.; four children: William (MaryLee) of Altoona, Timothy (Joanne) of Altoona, Patricia of Unionville and Virginia “Gigi” Campbell (Joe) of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Janelle Meadows (Michael), Erin Graham (Matt), Mara, Hailey and Kaitlyn Mitchell and Connor and Ian Campbell; four siblings: Donald of Defiance, Ohio, James (Carol) in Florida, Richard (Maria) of Altoona and Jean Ann Settimio (John) of Altoona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a nephew, Kevin; and a sister-in-law, Nancy.
Bob was a 1952 graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1952-53 with the Combat Engineers in Germany. He had worked at Butterick Co. for 42 years as a lithographer, supervisor and expediter. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for more than 50 years.
He was a proud member of the Graphic Communications International Union. He served on the Altoona Area school board for more than 20 years as well as on the board of the Altoona Area Vo-Tech School, where he served as president. He was an Altoona City Council member for several years and a lifetime member of the Bavarian Aid Society.
Bob enjoyed gardening, politics, dabbling in the stock market, home improvement projects and meeting with his cronies for morning coffee at McAbee’s, McDonald’s and Nicoletta’s to discuss the issues of the day. Most of all, he loved and cared for his family. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, who were so proud of him. He was known for his humor and work ethic, which his children and grandchildren inherited.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father Carl Spishak. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
