Kay L. Bechtel
Kay Lynn Bechtel, 58, Martinsburg, passed away Thursday evening at her home in Apollo Beach, Fla., after a courageous fight with breast cancer.
She was born in York, daughter of Carl C. “Buck” and Nancy R. (Keller) Alwine. She married Mark R. Bechtel on Jan. 2, 2000, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg.
She is survived by her mother, Nancy R. Alwine of Duncansville; husband, Mark R. Bechtel of Martinsburg; a daughter, Erica J. Peterson (husband, Tim) of Martinsburg; a stepdaughter, Andrea Bechtel of Evanston, Ill.; two stepsons: Adam Bechtel (wife, Julie) of State College and Zachary Bechtel of Arlington, Va.; two grandchildren: Riley and Hailey Peterson; a brother, Bruce M. Alwine (wife, Roberta) of Hollidaysburg; a niece, Stacey (Alwine) Said (husband, Chris); a nephew: Rusty Alwine; and many other nieces and nephews in the Bechtel family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carl C. “Buck” Alwine; and mother-in-law, Shirley A. Bechtel.
Kay was a 1973 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School.
She began her career as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Co. She retired as a product manager in marketing from Verizon, Altoona, after 38 years of service, receiving several distinguished awards and several patents for products and development.
Kay was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg.
She had a passion for gardening, landscaping and working outside. Kay enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially loved the ocean and vacationing at the beach. She had a special place in her heart for her two granddaughters, Riley and Hailey, whom she loved sharing special time with. She was blessed to have a huge support network of family and friends. Her courage and determination to fight were a true testament to her faith in God.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. A viewing will also be held from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, with Pastor Greg Harbaugh officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign in Kay’s memory, c/o American Cancer Society.
