Julia (Schettini) Shoenfelt

Julia (Schettini) Shoenfelt, 80, Hollidaysburg, died early Friday morning at UPMC Altoona surrounded by family and friends.

She was born and raised in Barnesboro (Allport), daughter of Jennie (Pandolfo) Schettini and Vito Schettini of Policastrello and Alberobello, Italy, respectively. She married John T. Shoenfelt on July 27, 1963.

Surviving are a son, Brian of Hollidaysburg; a brother, Michael Schettini and wife, Linda, of Northern Cambria; a sister-in-law, Lila Schettini of Bridgeport, W.Va.; two stepchildren: Mary “Mimi” Millin of Kutztown and Charlie of Gales Ferry, Conn.; a daughter-in-law, Sue Riley of Windsor Locks, Conn.; seven step-grandchildren; many devoted nieces and nephews, especially Nancy Mellot and Tracie Schettini, who helped care for her; and her many dear friends and neighbors, especially Tabatha, Julia and Sophia Griffin of Hollidaysburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and six brothers: John, Angelo, Nick, Vince, Peanuts (Vito Jr.) and Joe.

Julia attended Barnesboro High School. In her late teens, she began a lengthy battle with Crohn’s disease, which resulted in multiple surgeries and long hospital stays. Later she was the licensee and co-owner of Danny’s Hideaway, Altoona, during the 1960s and 1970s as well as a proprietor of the Penn Way Restaurant and Motel in Cresson until the mid 1980s.

Julia liked watching crime dramas, “Seinfeld,” “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Family Guy” on TV, as well as suspense and thriller films. She was the embodiment of hospitality. She enjoyed cooking and baking for friends and family, watching hummingbirds come to her back porch and seeing many beautiful sunsets. She was a deeply spiritual person and loved to pray the Holy Rosary.

Julia was forever grateful for the friendship and devotion of Julia Bowers, Trudy Elbin and Don Chile over the years.

Friends will be received from 1:30 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, by Father Clement Gardner. Committal will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hollidaysburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (www.ccfa.org) in Julia’s name.
