V. Gene Conrad

V. Gene Conrad, 83, Altoona, died Thursday at Valley View Home.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late William H. and Margaret S. (Stamm) Conrad.

Surviving are a brother, Jack S. and wife, Lois, of Harrisburg; two nieces and two nephews and his extended family: Skip and Sally Mattas, Dan and Brenda Mattas, Brent and Patty Mattas, Dee and Shawn Noland, and their children; his beloved goddaughter, Brooke E. Noland; and many friends.

V. Gene was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School and graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. degree in 1951 and a master’s degree in 1961. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, serving from 1951-53, mainly in the Panama Canal Zone. He retired from Altoona Area School District in 1985 with 34 years of service as an elementary school teacher at the old Curtin Elementary School.

V. Gene was a life member of Christ Second Lutheran Church and of the Sunday school. He was also a member of the Penn State Alumni Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and its Blair County Chapter, Pennsylvania State Education Association, AARP and Blair County Historical Society.

He enjoyed talking to people at gatherings, reading, purchasing Hallmark cards for many of his family members and friends, living in his home, Woodcock Valley dinners with his lady friends, and most importantly being surrounded by people he loved. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Sunday, July 21, 2013, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, Pastor T.M. Talbot-Moses officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
