James William Hoover
James William Hoover, 93, of 563 Oak St., Tyrone, died Tuesday at the Tyrone Hospital Emergency Room.
He was born in Tyrone, son of the late William N. and Grace Elizabeth (Peary) Hoover.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Marie Louise (Troxell); two sons: James R. (Rose Ann) of Newark, Del., and Robert H. (Melinda) of Easley, S.C.; a daughter, Natalie Dean (Glen) of Anchorage, Alaska; a grandson, Herbert Hoover (Koren) of New York City; two brothers: Charles of Milton and John (Irene) of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Donald, Willard, Ernest and Clarence.
James was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, serving as a technical sergeant in the European Theater and flying 66 missions as navigator on a B-26. A man of many talents, he was a furniture maker, upholsterer and tile fitter and retired in 1984 as a local State Farm Insurance agent.
James served as mayor of Tyrone from 1970-74 and was very active in the community. He had been a member of the Great Books Club and the former Lion’s Club, served on the Northern Blair County Sewer Authority and helped establish the Blair Senior Services Center in Tyrone.
There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at the Tyrone Church of the Good Shepherd, the Rev. Aden Wertz officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Tyrone Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
