Chief Robert ‘Rick’ McAbee
Chief Robert “Rick” McAbee, 42, died Monday, June 3, 2013, in Virginia Beach, Va.
He was born in Spartanburg, S.C.
Surviving are his wife, Melissa, and two sons, Braeden and Asher, all of Altoona; his father, Ronald; and a sister, Penelope.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1993 as a hospital corpsman and upon completing training, reported to Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va. He transferred to the Navy’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal community in 2003. Rick served two tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom and a tour in Navy Region Southeast and had returned home from a six-month deployment to Bahrain attached to Task Group 56.1.
Rick earned several personal awards for his dedication and service. Rick honorably served his nation for 19 years, achieving the rank of chief petty officer.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron St., Alexandria, Va., where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
