Luther F. Pierce

April 26, 1942 – May 16, 2013

Luther F. Pierce, 71, Altoona, died Thursday at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness.

He was born in Claysburg, son of the late Wallace and Mabel (Ford) Pierce. He married Shelly Kolbasook on Oct. 20, 1995, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Surviving are his wife; four children: Luther, Noel, Serena Pierce-Haller and Maria Pierce, all of Altoona; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Mary Trice of Mount Union and Emma L. Mack of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Willis, Paul and Charles; and two sisters: Callie and Carrie.

Luther was a 1960 graduate of Claysburg-Kimmel High School and a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from PennDOT as a foreman after 50 years of service. He was a member of The Church of God in Christ and the Arandale Elks.

Luther was a disc jockey (DJ Luda), a comedian, a great football player and a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 23, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A memorial service will follow at noon Thursday in Stevens Memorial Chapel by Bishop B.J. Ravenal Sr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.
