Joseph Leo ‘Joe’ Himes

Joseph Leo “Joe” Himes, 71, Riggles Gap, went home Tuesday afternoon surrounded by his family at his home.

He was born in Antis Township, son of the late Anthony C. and Dorothy A. (Briggs) Himes. He married Rose Ann Riccio on Nov. 30, 1963, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Juniata.

Surviving are his wife; three sons: Thomas J. (Cathy) and Todd J. (Deena), both of Altoona, and Troy J. (Amy) of Fort Valley, Ga.; a special son-in-law, Mark T. Miner of Altoona; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine brothers: Charles (Jill), Anthony (Mary), Paul (Bernie), David (Peggy), Ronald (Debbie), William (Cindy), Richard (Connie), Robert (Roseanne) and Dennis (Sue); two sisters: D. Darlene (Don) Curry and Sherry L. (Dale) Merritts; and his special pet, Sophia.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa J. Miner, in 2008.

Joe was owner and operator of Joe Himes & Sons Excavating and also retired from SKF Industries after 23 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Altoona, and the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Edward O’Malley Chapter.

Joe enjoyed hunting and restoring classic vehicles. He was a kind and generous man and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Altoona, by Father Terrence Smith. Committal rites and entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Altoona.
