Robert E. Kerns

Robert E. Kerns, 72, Hollidaysburg, died Monday morning at Altoona Regional after a brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of Ellis F. and Helen (Powell) Kerns. He married Nancy J. Hoover on Feb. 15, 1969, at First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Deborah M. Kerns of Duncansville and Margaret A. Lenfest of Winter Park, Fla.; five grandchildren: Ashleigh, Emmaleigh, Matthew, Katherine and Joshua Lenfest, all in Florida; a brother, John Harry Kerns (Patty) of Hermitage, Tenn.; and two sisters: Becky Thomas Kerns of Summit, N.J., and Mary-Margaret Kerns of New York, N.Y.
Bob also is survived by nieces and nephews as well as his brothers-in-law: Carl Hoover, Don (Helen) Hoover and Ken (Nora) Hoover.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Powell Kerns, in 2010.
Bob was a 1958 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. He and Nancy had been the proprietors of the Blue and White Snack Bar (Curley’s) since 1962, and he was the steward at the Hollidaysburg American Legion. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg.
His love of music began early in junior high school and continued throughout his life, including his own band, The Nocturnes, and most recently with the Hollidaysburg Alumni Community Band and also the Altoona Community Band. He was a member of Juniata Lodge, F&AM, Hollidaysburg, Altoona Consistory and the Jaffa Shrine.
Bob was a life member of the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company, serving as chief for 17 years and currently serving as fire marshal and president of the Relief Association within the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company. He was currently fire marshal of the Borough of Hollidaysburg, secretary of Blair County Allied Firemen’s Association and honorary past president of the Central District Volunteer Firemen’s Association. He also served as president of the Hollidaysburg American Legion Ambulance Service and was a member of the Firemen’s Association of the State of Pennsylvania, an honorary member of the Cambria County Firemen’s Association, a member of the Swiss Club and a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society, American Legion Post 516, Hollidaysburg, Buccinese Society and the Elks Club, Huntingdon.
Bob was active in fire prevention throughout the state.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, where a fireman’s service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Friends will also be received from 9 until the 10 a.m. funeral service Friday, April 26, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg, the Revs. Dennis Derr and Dr. D.L. Brinton Shafer officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
The family requests that donations be made to the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company, Hollidaysburg American Legion Ambulance Service, Bob’s family or the charity of your choice in memory of Bob.
