Maxine E. Larson

Maxine E. Larson, 90, formerly of Sinking Valley, passed away Saturday morning at Altoona Regional.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Magnus and Maude (Fleck) Paisley. She was twice married, first to Richard “Nick” Nicodemus, who preceded her in death in 1970; she then married H. Donald Larson, to whom she had been happily married since Feb. 24, 1983.

Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Ann Harshbarger; six grandchildren: Jennifer (Wayne) Schepens of Severna Park, Md., Scott (Lisa) Harshbarger of Pittsburgh, Adam Nicodemus of Philadelphia, Joshua (Julie) Nicodemus of Baltimore, Md., Erin (Wendell) VanHouten of Virginia Beach, Va., and Ryan (Stacy) Nicodemus of Richmond, Va.; eight great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Nicholas and Meredith Schepens, Jacob, Zoey and Piper Harshbarger, and Garrett and Evan VanHouten; a stepdaughter, Donna (Phurba) Sherpa of Newark, Del.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Patrick R. Nicodemus; a son-in-law, James Harshbarger; and a granddaughter, Erica Nicodemus. Maxine was the last surviving sibling of her six sisters and one brother: Helen Bender, Ginny Brunner, Thomas Paisley, Gertrude Smith, Martha Muscatelli, Jane Newman and Edna Barrett.

Maxine was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II as a WAVE and attaining the rank of specialist second class. She retired as a quality control inspector from Veeder-Root after 30 years of service.

Maxine was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, and a member of the Unter Uns, Swiss Rifle Club and Bavarian Aid Society of Altoona. She loved her family dearly and lived every day of her life to the fullest.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, Monsignor Timothy Stein officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
