John M. ‘Squeek’ Woods

Nov. 15, 1924 – April 26, 2013

John M. “Squeek” Woods, 88, Hollidaysburg, passed away Friday evening at The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg after an extended illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of Mary (McDonald) Stapleton. He married Shirley Piper, who preceded him in death, and then married to Joann Miller.

He is survived by his wife; sons: John (Donna) Woods of Knoxville, Tenn., Marty (Jane) Miller of Ashburn, Va., John (Janis) Miller of Hollidaysburg, James (Penny) Miller of Hollidaysburg; daughter, Karen Sue Bryant (Basil) of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren: Chris Woods, Mike Bryant, P.J. Bryant, Ethan Miller, Bethany Miller, Justin Miller and Jennifer Miller; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in WWII and Korea with an honorable discharge. He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of General Services.

He was a member of the Heidelberg Country Club, Hollidaysburg and Duncansville VFWs, and was an avid Penn State fan.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg. A funeral service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home by the Rev. Sharon Erb. Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery.

The family requests that donations be made to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. Altoona, Pa., in memory of Squeek.
