Anna Margaret Hammond

Anna Margaret Hammond, 89, Cresson, died Wednesday in Canfield, Ohio.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Melville) Gutwald.

Surviving are three children: Marcia E. of Canfield, Ohio, Stephen in New Jersey and Kerry (Kathy Carney) of Cresson Township; a daughter-in-law, Deborah (Olson) Hammond of Canfield, Ohio; five grandchildren: Mark Riden (Sabrina), Patrick Detwiler (Diane) and Mikal, Megan and Mathew K. Hammond; and three great-grandchildren: Nathan, Samantha and Sydney.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Margaret (Moran) Gutwald, who reared her from infancy; her loving husband, Stephen, in October 2011; and a son, James, in May 2011.

Margaret was a 1942 graduate of Cresson High School. During WWII, she was a secretary at the Pentagon, and she retired as a receptionist/switchboard operator from Mount Aloysius College, Cresson, with more than 27 years of service. She considered her job a wonderful blessing and enjoyed working with the staff, faculty and students.

Margaret was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and its Legion of Mary. She was very proud to be an Army wife and enjoyed traveling. She lived in six different states, as well as Frankfurt, Germany, and Okinawa, Japan.

Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where a Legion of Mary rosary will be held at 3 p.m., followed by a vigil for the deceased. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at St. Aloysius Church, by the Very Rev. John D. Byrnes. Committal will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to Cresson Fire Company or Cambria Alliance EMS Service.
