Wava Dauphin Nolan
Wava Dauphin “Ma” Nolan, 92, Altoona, died Saturday at Golden LivingCenter-Hillview after a brief illness.
She was born in Sandy Ridge, daughter of the late Glenn Vernon and Adda Esther (Cowher) Hoover. She married Stuart E. Nolan on April 3, 1943, in Greenville, and he died Dec. 6, 1977.
Surviving are a daughter, Colleen K. McKee of Altoona; two sons: Stuart W. and wife, Deborah, of Altoona and J. Scott and wife, Sandra, of Fredericksburg, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister, Winona E. Dively; as well as an aunt and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Colleen K. Peth; two granddaughters: Colleen Renee Nolan and Christiann McKee; and a son-in-law, John McKee.
Wava was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and received a bachelor’s degree at State Teacher’s College in Lock Haven. She began her teaching career in Claysburg and Tyrone and was employed many years in Altoona. She helped in summer theater and was a director of the playground program for the Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission. She retired from the personnel department at Warnaco in Altoona.
Wava was a member of Jaggard United Methodist Church and Alpha Sigma Tau. She enjoyed reading, all types of puzzles, dancing, sewing, needlework and crocheting afghans (more than 100) for her children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, where a funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, March 28, 2013, Pastor Chris Thomas officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
