Robert W. ‘Smokie’ Myers

Robert W. “Smokie” Myers, 74, Spooner, Wis., formerly of Oakdale and Hastings, Minn., and Tyrone, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, after a 19-year battle with carcinoid cancer.

Surviving are his wife and best friend of 53 years, Phyllis C. (Johnson); four children: Scott (Kathy), Todd (Andrea), Sherry (Scott) Mattson and Laura (Jason) Berlin; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers: Paul (Gail) and John (Gail); and two sisters: Catherine (Pete) Stringfellow and Judy (Dan) Reeder.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Robert S. and Nora B. (Stover) Myers, formerly of Tyrone; his parents-in-law: Howard J. and Gladys (Kjeldsen) Johnson; and a granddaughter, Sarah Beth Myers Berlin, who was 17 and Grandpa’s good friend.

Smokie was a retired police officer for Hastings and Oakdale, Minn. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 39, North St. Paul, Minn., past president of Minnesota Amateur Athletic Union and Oakdale Athletic Association girls’ basketball and founder and former director of North Tartan Girls Basketball Club.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until the noon memorial service Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Sandberg Funeral Home, 2593 E. Seventh Ave., North St. Paul, Minn. Interment will be at Union Cemetery, Maplewood, Minn.
