Mary Louise Templon

Mary Louise Templon, 85, Altoona, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday surrounded by her family after a three-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Walter A. and Elizabeth (Keith) Bair. She married Melvin P. Templon on Sept. 6, 1947, at Salem United Church of Christ, Altoona. The couple recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at their home with family and friends.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years; four children: Roger and wife, Marilyn, Paula and Joel, all of Altoona, and Janice Thomas and husband, Scott, of Hainesport, N.J.; a granddaughter, Michelle Brandt and husband, Christian, of Orlando, Fla., and their daughter, Makayla Brandt; a brother, Alan Bair of Scottsdale, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends who watched over her throughout her last hours: Chrissy Ferguson, Sharon Daniele, James Caltagirone and Charlotte Keifer, all of whom brought many smiles to her face and brought her through her toughest days.

She was preceded in death by two sisters: Elda Wilson and Elizabeth “Betty” Galbraith; and a brother, William Bair.

Mary was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School and earned her LPN degree from the Altoona Vo-Tech School. She was formerly employed as a secretary by the Van Zandt VA Medical Center and as a nurse in the physical therapy department at Mercy Hospital.

She resided in East End her entire life and was a longtime member of East End Salem United Church of Christ, serving as their organist and a Sunday school teacher for many years. She later became a member of Juniata United Methodist Church.

Mary loved to play the piano and organ and was an avid reader of books. She volunteered for many years at Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg, where she shared her musical talents with the residents on a weekly basis and kept their beautiful flower gardens in tip-top shape. She was a gentle soul who reached out to many and will be sorely missed.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the noon funeral service Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, the Rev. Brent Salsgiver officiating.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mary’s memory to either the Children’s Room at the Altoona Area Public Library or Home Nursing Agency Hospice, whose support and strength were invaluable during her illness. God bless those angels and all those who cared for her during her illness.
