John P. ‘Oopie’ Reilly

John Paul “Oopie” Reilly, 87, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Altoona, son of Hugh and Mary (Funk) Reilly.

Surviving are his wife and longtime love of 64 years, Cecile; four children: Hugh of Altoona, David of Blue Knob, Constance Latini and husband, Dennis, in Kentucky and Patricia of Altoona; nine grandchildren: Shawn Reilly and wife, Michelle, Nicole Beckel, Jaime Stanton and husband, Greg, Christopher Reilly and fiancee, Rachelle, Jessie Reilly and fiance, Erik, Alexis Beckel, Meghan Stewart and husband, Bobby, Matthew VanSickel and Scott Reilly; nine great-grandchildren: Cooper, Nathan, Brianna, Sadie, Reilly, Madison, Jocelyn, Maxton and Brock; and a sister, Jane Munger in Ohio.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh.

John served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard during WWII as a signalman third class, and he set foot in 18 different countries. He retired from Conrail after 42 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and served as a liturgical minister for 33 years.

He also belonged to the Bavarian Aid Society, The Friends of the Irish (Notre Dame club), Descendants of the Civil War veterans, Juniata VFW Post and American Legion Post 745, of which he was commander.

John will be remembered as a wonderful loving husband, father and grandfather. His love for his family, his passion for Notre Dame football and his kindness and generosity to everyone are his legacy.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Juniata.
