John Benton Felty

John Benton Felty, 88, Penrose, N.C., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Cedar Mountain House.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John Adam and Phyllis (Benton) Felty.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Marian (McMahon); a son, John Wayne and wife, Cheri Miller, of Brevard, N.C.; two daughters: Rebecca and Anne, both of Brevard; six grandchildren: Jenni, Allison, Katy, Loie, Nora and Noel; six great-grandchildren: Lilah, Samuel, Rose, Izzy, Hattie and Miles; three nieces: Debbie, Carol and Janie; and a nephew, Butch.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara (Vaughn), in 1992; and a sister, Jane Dillen.

John was a graduate of Gettysburg College and Penn State University, where he received a master’s degree in horticulture. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for extraordinary bravery and composure under fire in the European Campaign.

He moved to Brevard in 1967 to work for the North Carolina State University Horticulture Crops Research Station. In 1968, he started his own company, Pisgah Pest Control, and he operated the business until he retired in 1988. The business still remains in the family.

John was a member and past deacon of Little River Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years. He served his community, tutoring children of all ages as a volunteer. He served as a member of Civitan in Pompano Beach, Fla. After moving to Brevard, he coached many youth sports and served as assistant baseball coach at Brevard High School from 1979-82.

John, known as “Murph” by close friends and family, was blessed with a congenial nature and a warm sense of humor. He loved sports, particularly baseball, playing both collegiately and professionally for the Florida Indians.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2013, at Little River Baptist Church, the Rev. Chris Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service.
