Eugene Edgar Huss
Eugene E. Huss, 96, Duncansville, died Tuesday morning at Altoona Regional.
He was born in Bedford, son of Francis X. and Ella (Forney) Huss. He married Vera L. Pollard on July 20, 1941, in Spartanburg, S.C., and she died Nov. 3, 2008, after sharing 67 years of marriage.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon L. Fochtman, with whom he resided; a sister, Dorothy “Dot” Holsinger of Roaring Spring; a brother, Francis “Frank” of Fayetteville; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Lynda C. Trout.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth N. Osterhous; and four brothers: Barney, Robert “Bob,” John “Ed” and Ernest “Ernie.”
Eugene was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving as a private first class in the South Pacific with Company D, 111th Infantry, 7th and 28th Divisions. He retired as a driver from Lafferty Trucking Co., Altoona, after 41 years of service.
He served in the Blue Mountain Civilian Conservation Corps, Chapter 113, and helped to build Cowans Gap State Park. He was a charter member of the reactivated Civil War Company F 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Corps. He was a charter member of the Altoona Volunteer Sportsmen’s Association and a member of the Hollidaysburg and Frankstown Sportsmen’s clubs. He was a life member of the Duncansville VFW and a member of the Fort Fetter American Legion Post 516 and Teamsters Local Union 110.
Eugene enjoyed fishing and hunting and was fond of the family cat, Callie.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, lay minister Sarah Helen McCloskey officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
Memorials may be given to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
