Wilbur Grant ‘Whitey’ Burns

Wilbur Grant “Whitey” Burns, 84, Altoona, died Sunday morning at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Francis E. and Leotta O. (Hazlett) Burns. He married Joyce M. Menke on July 31, 1953, in Silver Springs, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; six children: a son, Paul C. Burns of Florida, a daughter, Dawn M. O’Connor and her husband, Sean, of Altoona, a daughter, Sharon L. Spicer and her husband, Charles, of Altoona, a daughte,r Lorrie A. Litzinger of Altoona, a daughter, Karen G. Sanders and her husband, Scott, of Altoona, a son, Keith A. Burns and his wife, Tina, of Florida; 17 grandchildren: Tina Philhowser, Melinda Devaux, Chris Burns, Matthew Burns, Paul Masic Jr., Kristal Masic, Jennifer Peznola, Robert Becher Jr., Bradley Becher, Ryan Burns, Robert Burns, Danyelle Dean, Angela Hughes, Heather Burns, Keith Burns Jr., David Burns and Josh Burns; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Brad Bradfield; a niece, Sandy McGuire; and his best friend, Oreo.

Whitey was preceded in death by a brother, Paul; and a sister, Carrie.

Mr. Burns was a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, attaining the rank of CT1 serving as a communications technician.

He retired as the director of environmental services from the Altoona Hospital.

Whitey enjoyed fishing, camping and was a member of the Swiss Rifle Club.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
