Thomas E. Ciavarella
Thomas E. Ciavarella, Monroe Avenue, Altoona, passed away early Sunday morning after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Thomas and Adeline (Polignone) Ciavarella. On July 8, 1950, he married Catherine M. Lagonia of Austin, Pa.
He is survived by a son, Thomas J. and his wife, Marites, of Pennsylvania Furnace; a daughter, Tina M. of Altoona; and a sister, Pauline Veckov of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, and brother, Michael.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
After graduating from Altoona High School in 1946, Tom worked in the design department of Sylvania Electronics Inc., radio tubes division, in Emporium.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army between 1952 and 1954, achieving the rank of Sergeant, while working in the Army Intelligence School at Fort Riley, Kansas.
After discharge, he attended Penn State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1959. He returned to Sylvania Electronics Inc., where he worked as an industrial engineer in the product development section between 1959 and 1967. Tom then pursued a teaching career as an instructor in the engineering department at Penn State Altoona between 1967 and 1988.
After retiring in 1988, he pursued numerous hobbies, becoming an accomplished upholsterer, home tailor and handyman.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, in the Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
