Raymond F. Schwarz

Raymond F. Schwarz, 77, Altoona, died Saturday at Altoona Regional after a brief illness.

He was born in Cicero, Ill., son of the late Raymond A. and Dorothy (Pielmeier) Schwarz. He married Janet Smith on Aug. 11, 1956, in Philadelphia.

Surviving are his wife; two sons: Terry and wife, Celia, of Charleston, S.C., and David and wife, Donna Jean, of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Donna Schwarz of Pompano Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren: Christopher, Raymond, Gregory and Crystal; six great-grandchildren: Noah, Danica, Marek, Madison, Yan and Yohan; a brother, Joseph of Laredo, Texas; and two sisters: Charlene Zeglin and Roberta Worthen, both of Chicago.

Ray earned an associate’s degree in police and fire science. He retired from the U.S. Navy in September 1972 after 20 years of service, having served during the Korean conflict, Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War. Upon returning to Altoona in 1977, he worked as an insurance agent for the Knights of Columbus for 15 years.

Ray was a former member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was a member of VFW Post 860 in Pittsburgh and Fleet Reserve Association and was a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus. He enjoyed reading, football and making model airplanes.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. today at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Stevens Memorial Chapel by Father Brian Saylor. Committal will be held at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery with military honors.
