Catherine E. Korte Kissell

Catherine E. Korte Kissell, 98, formerly of Sebring, Fla., died Wednesday morning at Graystone Court, Bellemead, where she was a resident for seven years.

She was born in Lilly, daughter of the late Lewis I. and Minniebell (Krumenaker) Hugar. She was twice married, first to Howard C. Korte, then to Earl C. Kissell, both of whom preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters: Catherine V. Raugh of Poolesville, Md., and Ruth E. Roland of Altoona; two sons: Howard C. Korte and wife, Monika, of Metuchen, N.J., and Stephen A. Korte and wife, Debbie, of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was the last surviving of nine children and was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sharon Raugh.

Catherine was one of the original Altoona school guards, mainly at the Cathedral and Roosevelt Junior High School crossings, and she also was the owner and operator/proprietor of Kathy’s Snack Shop in Wehnwood from 1963-80. She was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona.

Catherine enjoyed crocheting, and she bowled until 91 years young.

At Catherine’s request, there will be no viewing. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, by Monsignor Timothy Stein. Committal will be at Blair Memorial Park.
